How To Prepare Ogbono Soup And Its Health Benefits

Ogbono soup is a popular Nigerian dish. A soup originally cooked and eaten in the eastern part of Nigeria. Ogbono as it is widely known in  africa and South East Asian and from  the family irvingiacese,commonly known as the bush mango in eastern Nigeria. Ogbono soup is a dish with high nutritional value made with considerable local variations.

Its fruit is a large drupe with fibrous flesh. A fat and protein rich seed is found inside,  which is sun dried for preservation and can be sold whole or in powdered form. Its high content of mucilage( a thick gluey substance produced by nearly all plant and some microorganisms) allows it to be used as thickening agents for such dishes like Ogbono soup.

How To Make Ogbono Soup


  • 1 cup ground ogbono
  • 3/4 cup hot palm oil
  • Cooked Goat Meat
  • Cooked Beef
  • Cooked Shaki (Tripe)
  • Cooked Kpomo (Cow Skin)
  • 5 red scotch bonnet peppers
  • 5 yellow scotch bonnet peppers
  • 1 large onion bulb
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 cup shredded stock fish
  • 1 cup shredded dry fish Opeyi (optional)
  • 2 crayfish seasoning cubes
  • 1 table spoon ground crayfish
  • 7 cups beef stock or water
  • 1/2 table spoon ground pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped okra
  • 1 cup chopped pumpkin leaves
  • 1/2 cup shredded uziza leaves
