Additionally, you will need some equipment for cooking the yam. You will need a pot for the first step of the cooking process, and for the pounding stage, you can choose one of these three tools:
- Food processor
- Stand or hand mixer
If you choose a blender for making pounded yam, you will need the chopper bowl attachment. If you prefer to work with a stand or hand mixer, you will require a dough hook and a beater attachment for making your yam perfect. Keep in mind that if you are using a blender, it should be quite powerful with wattage starting at 400W. If your blender is less powerful than that, there is a risk of it burning out trying to blend the yam.
To Make Pounded Yam With A Blender
- Wash the yams, peel off the skin, and cut into chunks.
- Put the chopped yams into a pot and cover with water. Put the pot on the stove on medium heat, bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and cook until the yams can be easily pierced with a fork.
- Strain the yams and put them back into the pot.
- If you have a low-wattage blender or simply want to make sure it does not burn out, you can lightly mash the yams with a fork to make it easier for your blender to pound the yams.
- Put the yams in small batches into a blender or food processor and blitz twice for 10 seconds at a time. This should be enough to turn the yam chunks into the stretchy, doughy pieces of pounded yam we all know and love.
- Scoop out the pounded yam from the blender into a bowl and repeat with the remaining yam.
- When you finish blitzing all of the cooked yams, the pounded yam is ready to be served.
So how to serve pounded yam? While some pounded yam fans enjoy it on its own, most Nigerians prefer to eat pounded yam with their favourite soup – for example, Egusi soup, Nsala soup, bitter leaf soup, or any other soup you love.
